A Fulwood preschool is celebrating after receiving an “outstanding” rating from Ofsted.

Little Acorns Pre-School at Kennington Primary School in Fulwood received the highest possible rating overall and in each of the five areas assessed. Inspectors visited the preschool in September and praised the staff, curriculum and children’s “exceptional” progress.

Among the many points of praise, inspectors said staff did an excellent job of supporting children’s thinking skills; Children “learn about their own culture and that of others through many engaging activities and quality interactions.” Children learn how to protect themselves and others; and staff and parents have strong partnerships.

The report said: “Skilled staff support children to make exceptional progress in the carefully planned curriculum, which focuses on communication and language skills. Staff plan activities to capture children’s interest from early on. In-depth conversations with parents help staff find out what the children already know and enjoy.

“This helps staff build on children’s learning from the start. The staff encourage children’s curiosity and love of learning by expanding their wealth of experience through interesting visits. For example, children learn about animal care in a veterinary practice. Staff do an excellent job of promoting children’s sense of self and belonging by adapting the nursery environment to reflect children’s lives and backgrounds at home.

“Staff are excellent role models for children and ensure exemplary behavior and manners throughout their lessons. Children quickly develop strong bonds with teachers that last long after they leave school. Staff encourage imaginative play, which promotes high standards and boosts children’s self-esteem.

“Children confidently demonstrate their deep understanding through interesting discussions while playing. Staff skillfully expand children’s vocabulary and provide contextual language, such as ‘mechanic’. Children demonstrate mature levels of engagement in play and learning and are well prepared for a seamless transition to school.”
