Drivers who are warned about an accident face a £5,000 fine

A car expert has issued a stark warning to those involved in a crash to avoid hefty fines of up to £5,000.

While no driver likes to think about how they and their car would fare in an accident, having a plan for drivers to follow in the event of a collision could help them save thousands in fines and hefty repair bills.

Mark Llewellyn, managing director of vehicle repair service provider Revive! Auto Innovations has urged drivers not to flee the scene if they have caused an accident with another vehicle.

He said: “Busy car parks can be hectic, making it easier for perpetrators to disappear after causing damage, but with enhanced monitoring and enforcement we are ensuring drivers who cause damage are held to account.”

“The technology is a step forward in creating safer parking environments and protecting honest drivers from bearing the costs.”

While it may seem tempting at first, driving off after an accident without checking with the owner or leaving contact information can get a motorist in serious trouble.

Under Section 170 of the Road Traffic Act, drivers must stop and exchange details within 24 hours or report the incident to the police to avoid penalties including fines of up to £5,000 and 10 points.

It is becoming increasingly difficult for drivers to avoid detection after accidents as many public places such as parking lots are equipped with ANPR cameras that can read license plates.

Instead of fleeing, Revive! We encourage drivers to find a safe place nearby to stop, regardless of the extent of the damage caused by the collision.

They should then exchange information such as their name, contact information, insurance policy and witness statements with anyone else injured in the accident to determine how to repair any damage.

If owners of other vehicles are not present, drivers should leave a note with contact information or report the incident to police, who can contact the driver.
