Criminals try to lure unsuspecting bank customers into a trap with emails that appear deceptively real. They create a pretext to get their victim’s personal information and money. The consumer advice center issues a warning.

Comdirect: Fine of 49 euros

The phishing email supposedly comes from the direct bank Comdirect. The subject line says “Reminder: Renewal of your photoTAN activation required”. Customers are also asked to set up “photoTAN activation” as a necessary security measure. However, this email, which initially sounds official, is a scam, as the consumer advice center warns.

The phishing email informs Comdirect customers that they had already received an activation letter. In addition, consumers will be able to activate the photoTAN by November 15th. Anyone who doesn’t follow the instructions will supposedly have to pay a fine of 45 euros!

This is how consumers should react

An indication that the email comes from fraudsters is the deadline stated in the email. In this way, they create the pressure to act criminally so that the victims fall into the trap without much thought.

More exciting news:

Comdirect customers who fall victim to the scam should immediately move the phishing emails to the spam folder without being answered. The consumer advice center also advises that if you receive suspicious emails, you should check the official websites to see whether there are similar requests there.
