From Bond villain to avenger à la Jason Statham & Gerard Butler

From Bond villain to avenger à la Jason Statham & Gerard Butler

A first trailer has been released for the upcoming action thriller “The Amateur”, which shows Bond villain Rami Malek in his first real action role.

In the action genre, there are a few striking faces who can make the real tough guy stand out because they have the necessary angular faces: Gerard Butler and Jason Statham belong to this rare guild of macho heroes. Just as Butler lets those responsible for the death of his beloved family bleed in the vigilante thriller “Law of Vengeance” and Statham lets his targets fall to the sword in an incredibly deadly, precise and original way in the action thriller “The Mechanic: Resurrection”, you can Now Rami Malek can also act as an avenger with IQ, as the first trailer for “The Amateur” tantalizingly reveals:

The 43-year-old Malek is an interesting choice for the executives in director James Hawes’ (“One Life”) film adaptation of author Robert Littell’s novel of the same name. Sure, in “The Amateur” Malek also embodies more of the thinking man, but for a change he can’t just be a passive part of an action film, like in “Battleship”, “Need for Speed” and to a certain extent also as the villain Lyutsifer Safin in Bond -Film “No Time to Die”. The Oscar-winning actor is otherwise known for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in the biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” and the series “Mr. Robot”. The film adaptation was announced in November 2006. At that time, Hugh Jackman (“Deadpool & Wolverine”) was supposed to take responsibility. Then the production disappeared into obscurity until it reappeared in 2023.

“The Amateur”: Never underestimate a grieving man with access to deadly materials

Charles Heller (Rami Malek) works for the CIA, although not in the field, but as a cryptographer. When his wife (Rachel Brosnahan) dies in a terrorist attack in London, the grieving widower wants training in weapons and hand-to-hand combat in order to hold those responsible for his wife’s death accountable, but his superiors just laugh at him. They don’t trust him to do anything. When he realizes that the CIA is allowing his wife’s death to go unpunished, he takes his own initiative to find the culprits and bring them to justice.

For the more inclined cinema audience, “The Amateur” will offer things they want in the genre, but in a way that makes the action feel fresh, emphasizes director Hawes (via The Hollywood Reporter):

“The elements an audience wants in a spy thriller are all there, but with a twist.” The big centerpiece is the character of Charlie; and he is the hero and the justice that was not expected. The unexpected hero. And this character’s journey, along with a real emotional arc, goes from grief to a kind of determination.”

In addition to Rami Malek and Rachel Brosnahan, the star-studded action thriller also stars Holt McCallany, Laurence Fishburne, Julianne Nicholson, Adrian Martinez, Marc Rissmann, Takehiro Hira, Caitríona Balfe and Jon Bernthal.

“The Amateur” was originally scheduled to open in German cinemas in November of this year, the new date is now April 10, 2025. And while we’re at it, you can prove to us that you’re very familiar with the “James Bond” films with this 007 quiz:
