Politicians will use special paint against wild peeing in Hanover

Hanover. Wild peeing is an unsavory thing, especially in densely built-up areas. The acrid smell of urine remains permanently in the air in problem areas. Politicians in Hanover’s Mitte district have had enough of it. They will use a special paint that could be unpleasant for the wild peeers: it splashes back and dirty at least the shoes and pants of the pee offenders.

Some communities have already tested the paint. Most recently, the city of Gelsenkirchen caused a stir. They had the coating applied to concrete walls at the main train station. This ensures that the urine not only rolls off, but is thrown back as a spray jet. Cologne, Hamburg and Mainz have also already tested the paint. The first experiences in Gelsenkirchen were promising. Mainz rated a first attempt as successful and used the paint for other buildings. In Cologne, however, Deutsche Bahn declared the operation at the main station a failure.

Wild peeing: One group causes particular problems

The special coating nevertheless appears as a suggestion in a study by the universities of Tübingen and Wuppertal, which deals with safety in the area of train stations. The advantages of this solution include cleaning costs, reduced odors and protection of the material. The study lists the cost of the paint. In addition, drunk people, the main culprits, “could not be deterred”.

In Hanover, Felix Mönkemeyer from the Left put the issue on the agenda. He calls for a model project that should be scientifically supported. If the measure is successful, it should be expanded. The proposal was well received by the other groups. There is a clear majority in favor of it. The vote on this was only postponed because, from a political perspective, details still needed to be clarified.

There are also problems with wild peeing here: the post tunnel next to the main train station.

Lots of approval for trying the special paint

“We think the proposal is good,” emphasized Green Party leader Arne Käthner. However, there is a risk that no specific points are mentioned where the test should be carried out. FDP parliamentary group leader Rolf Schmidt was “very impressed by how things are going in Gelsenkirchen”. He wants to vote for the test. CDU district councilor Diana Rieck-Vogt also praised the violation. However, with regard to the paint used, it calls for a test to be carried out to determine whether it is harmless to the environment.
