“Sissi” 2024: Christmas broadcast dates and all information

The “Sissi” films have fascinated TV viewers and cineastes for over fifty years. The successful film series featuring stars such as Romy Schneider and Gustav Knuth is considered one of the classics in German-language film history. Although the trilogy per se has nothing to do with Christmas, the films are particularly popular in the run-up to Christmas. Because what could be more festive and fairytale-like than the love story of the most famous empress in the world?

What is the “Sissi” trilogy about?

The “Sissi” trilogy includes three films: The best known and most popular is the original film “Sissi”, which was released in cinemas in 1955. “Sissi, the Young Empress” followed a year later. The series is completed by the third part “Sissi – Fateful Years of an Empress” (1957).

The films tell the story of the young Bavarian Princess Elisabeth, known as Sissi, who marries the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I and becomes Empress of Austria. The plot shows the romantic love story between Sissi and Franz Joseph, their adjustment to the strict court life in Vienna and their efforts to find their way in their roles.

The good news first: All three films will be broadcast on television again in 2024.

Romy Schneider in the role of her life

Romy Schneider is one of the most famous German actresses of all time. For years she embodied the role of the young empress and significantly shaped the image of this historical figure. Years later, however, she regretted the role, claiming in interviews that the historical film stuck to her like semolina porridge.

Nevertheless, the German-French woman achieved her international breakthrough with the role of Empress. In collaboration with Alain Delon, Romy Schneider landed another important cinema hit with the thriller “The Swimming Pool” in 1969 under director Jacques Deray.

Tragic death at the age of 43

“I can do everything in film, but nothing in life.” This sad statement marks the tragic fate of Romy Schneider, who died in 1982 at the age of just 43. Laurent Pétin, her partner at the time, found the actress lifeless at her desk. The cause of death was probably heart failure.

According to reports, this was preceded by an overdose of pills – according to the tabloid media, due to too much pain and unhappiness due to private strokes of fate that she was never able to process.

In fact, fate wasn’t very lucky with Romy Schneider. Despite her fervent wish to be a happy wife and loving mother, this was denied her: two failed marriages and the tragic death of her 14-year-old son David in an accident represent serious blows of fate.

Filming locations, backgrounds and facts about the “Sissi” trilogy

In the film, Sissi’s memories of Possenhofen with the idyllic Fuschlsee were brought to life. The historical Empress Sissi spent a significant part of her childhood in Possenhofen Castle in the Starnberg district, Upper Bavaria. However, at the time the “Sissi” films were filmed in the 1950s, the castle belonged to Erich and Kurt Bagusat, manufacturers of small engines and mopeds. They used it to produce fruit and auxiliary bicycle engines and ran a sheepfold there. Unfortunately, the building has been badly neglected, causing its original splendor to fade.

Lake Fuschl in the Austrian state of Salzburg served as an alternative filming location. There is the former Fuschl hunting lodge, which has been operated as a hotel since 1947. The filmmakers decided to use this hotel as a replacement for Possenhofen Castle. This decision transformed the hotel into a world-famous setting that welcomed well-known personalities such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, the later James Bond actor Roger Moore, the director of “Titanic” James Cameron and Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

The “Sissi” films are not only extremely popular in Austria and Germany, but have also achieved international cult status. They convey a romanticized and idealized idea of love, romance and life at the royal court. Romy Schneider’s charismatic performance as Sissi contributed greatly to the success of the films and made them timeless classics.

The production costs of the film were around ten million marks. A considerable investment for the time. According to the DHM (German Historical Museum Berlin), Piero Tosi’s hand-sewn costumes alone cost 20,000 German marks.

“Sissi” is historically incorrect, but still a global hit

Although the “Sissi” films incorporate some historical elements, they are essentially a romanticized depiction of the life of Empress Elisabeth. The focus is on her youth, her love for Franz Joseph and her personal conflicts with the labels and conventions of the imperial court. The films offer an idealized version of their story and provide only limited insight into the political and historical events of the time.

The “Sissi” trilogy remains an integral part of film history to this day and has a large fan base. The films have thrilled and influenced generations of viewers worldwide. They are not only a piece of German and Austrian history, but also a symbol of romance and female strength.
