Avoid a headache when returning to vacation with tips from the Better Business Bureau

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Now that the gift wrapping is off, some of us are getting ready to tackle the returns. To make this process go more smoothly, the Better Business Bureau (BBB), which serves central and southern Alabama, has shared important tips to help you manage the stress-free return from vacation.

Carl Bates, president of the Birmingham BBB, reminds consumers that it is important to understand store returns policies. He also points out that stores are not required by law to accept returns unless the item is defective or misrepresented.

“Post-holiday returns can be a source of stress if shoppers are unaware of the store’s policies,” Bates said. “By staying informed and planning ahead, consumers can process returns more easily and avoid unnecessary frustration.”

Tips for a hassle-free return

The BBB recommends the following steps:

• Research retailers: Research stores before purchasing BBB.org to view ratings, reviews and possible complaints.

• Understand store policies: Learn about return procedures, restocking fees, and whether the store offers cash refunds or store credits. Holiday return policies may vary, so always confirm.

• Check online policies: When purchasing online, check the return policy, including who covers shipping and whether in-store returns are allowed.

• Retain receipts and packaging: Most returns require original receipts and packaging. Adding gifts to gift receipts can make returns easier.

• Act quickly and bring your ID: Return policies are often time-limited. Don’t hesitate and have your ID ready as it may be required to prevent fraud.

Bates stresses the importance of showing ID and keeping receipts.

“We’ve seen a lot of things returned to stores that didn’t belong to the people trying to return them,” Bates said. “Things that were stolen and then brought back for money or credit that could be used for something else.”

Also, don’t expect cash if you don’t have a receipt. Many stores only issue credit in the form of a gift card.
