The international beer competition annually crowns the best beers in the world in numerous categories. This year, all of the winning breweries from Germany have one thing in common: they are at home in Franconia.

This year the competition was held in Ghent, Belgium, for the thirteenth time, the organizers announced on the beer award website. It was held for the first time in 2012. This year, however, participation was particularly high: over three days, 72 beer experts tested 1,705 beers from participating breweries from 39 countries around the world.

The best were then awarded gold, silver and bronze. Some of these awards went to Franconia this year. For example, the breweries from the region were able to impress in the Pils, Helles, Weizen and Baltic Porter categories. A Franconian also recently impressed in another competition: the restaurant “Zum Alten Zollhaus” in Forchheim won the TV cooking show “Mein Lokal, Dein Lokal” and beat, among others, an Icelandic restaurant from Hollfeld.

There are some old friends among the winners of the beer competition: the Maisel brewery and the Bayreuth beer brewery have already received several awards in recent years. This year the triumphant march continued: The Maisel brewery was able to secure various awards in three categories, making it the front runner among the Franconian winners.

The “Maisel & Friends Chocolate Bock” won gold in the Baltic Porter category. The brewery received silver for the wheat Doppelbock “Maisel’s Weisse Bajuwarus”. And there was a second silver medal for the non-alcoholic beer.
