Use advanced tire monitoring systems to prevent accidents, says Niosh

KUALA LUMPUR: The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (Niosh) has called for the mandatory use of advanced monitoring technologies such as Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) and telematics in all heavy vehicles to promptly detect mechanical problems.

Its deputy chairman, Manivanan Gowin, said these technologies could provide an early warning of potential harm that could endanger lives.

“It is time we leverage technological advances to improve road safety,” he said in a statement on Thursday (December 26) in response to the tragic accident at kilometer 204 northbound of the North-South Expressway (PLUS) in Melaka, which resulted in seven deaths, including five family members.

Manivanan said Niosh is also ready to provide its qualified experts to assist relevant authorities and agencies in identifying problems and finding solutions. – Bernama
