“I joke with family and friends that my husband snores loudly, but deep down I am seriously worried,” said Arunika Selvam, a 45-year-old married woman from Singapore.

“I would say if I talk to my husband about it, I’m offended.”

She says snoring is part of the package when they get married. But they have a serious impact on her husband and their relationship.

“I often wake up at night and get grumpy in the morning,” she told the BBC.

Her husband’s snoring also prevents her from sleeping well at night, and her work performance is affected because she doesn’t sleep well.

It’s very common to ignore your bedmate because they snore, but health and relationship experts say they can’t seriously affect your partner’s relationship, health and dates.

Is this sleep apnea?

Loud snoring is most often associated with a sleep disorder called obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

This is a condition in which breathing stops and starts repeatedly during sleep.

The disorder causes the walls of the throat to relax and constrict.

When something happens, it interrupts normal breathing and causes oxygen desaturation.

According to Dr. According to Dr. Ramamurthy Sathyamurthy, a consultant respiratory doctor at Britain’s James Cook University Hospital, sleep apnea presents with Orishirishi symptoms that can range from mild to moderate or severe, but usually get progressively worse.

I warn that an untreated condition can affect many aspects of the physical and mental health of both the snorer and the partner, including sex drive.

What are the symptoms of sleep apnea?

Symptoms occur primarily during sleep and include:

  • Loud snoring
  • Breathing stops and starts
  • Making gasping, snorting, or choking noises
  • Frequent waking up

During the day, those affected also suffer from:

  • Headache when waking up
  • I feel very tired
  • I find it difficult to concentrate
  • Bad memory
  • Feel depressed, irritable, or experience mood swings
  • Experience poor coordination
  • Lose sex drive

Oda health problems

In addition, obstructive sleep apnea can also cause health problems.

A sudden drop in blood oxygen levels that can occur during apnea raises blood pressure, experts warn, and increases the risk of related medical problems.

While some couples make fun of their partner’s snoring, they should have serious problems with their relationship, points out Dr. Sathyamurthy.

“Typically 90% of patients I see initiate a referral because the partner is severely affected,” I told the BBC.

It’s advisable to make partners sleep in different rooms, sometimes called “sleep divorce.”

That’s not necessarily a bad thing – US-based relationship therapist Sara Nasserzadeh sometimes recommends that couples sleep separately, with or without snoring.

Starting the day with a good night’s sleep promotes a healthier relationship for both partners, she told BBC, although of course this is only possible if an extra bedroom is available.

However, for some couples, a “sleep divorce” is the first step toward a more permanent separation.

I’ll take up the topic

Despite living in Singapore, Arunika Selvam has a highly developed country with one of the highest GDP per capita in the world – she is unable to find a suitable bed for her house.

“We rent out our guest room to earn extra income as the cost of living here is high for Singapore,” explains the mother of a man we haven’t married for 15 years.

But after countless sleepless nights, Selvam told her husband about my snoring problem.

I definitely don’t want to consult a doctor because both my dad and my grandfather snore and I think it’s completely normal.

According to Selvam, loud snoring in men is mostly considered a part of masculinity or part of masculinity, especially in some Asian cultures.

Sara Nasserzadeh says that in this situation it is important to find the right time to address the problem with your partner in a “gentle and careful way.”

“Maybe after I’ve had sex, maybe as a reason for a good mood and good connection,” adds Nasserzadeh, author of “Love by Design – 6 Ingredients to Build a Lifetime of Love.”

According to a social psychology expert, it’s also important to remember that people snore and are usually embarrassed about their condition.

Serious consequences

According to the British Snoring and Sleep Apnea Association, there are around 15 million snorers in the UK, affecting 30 million people – almost half the population.

Figures from a recent survey show that the number of men who snore is much higher than that of women, the association says.

But no matter who snores, their habit can have serious consequences.

Some reports suggest that snoring is one of the most common reasons for divorce in the United States and the United Kingdom, although it is difficult to find concrete evidence to support this claim.

Rita Gupta, a family lawyer from the UK, says her practice doesn’t see many divorce cases involving snoring.

“They are definitely often cited as a reason for marital unhappiness,” she told the BBC.

“I don’t hear many people say, ‘Well, we don’t sleep in separate rooms for several years because I snore anyway, and we drift apart,'” she adds.

The family lawyer says a common problem in divorce cases is neglect of medical treatment and failure to take the necessary steps to effectively resolve the issue, which indicates underlying commitment issues.

“For example, in a case against a man, my wife said: ‘You already snore a lot. They really affect my sleep. I never do anything to bother me.’”

What do you do about snoring or sleep apnea?

Treatments for sleep apnea attacks require lifestyle changes such as:

  • weight loss
  • Stop smoking
  • Limit your alcohol consumption

However, many patients require the use of a device called a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine.

They gently direct air into a mask that you wear over your mouth or nose while sleeping.

Dr. Ramamurthy Sathyamurthy says it’s important to prioritize the health of both the partner and the snorer and encourages them to seek medical advice.

“This is not only beneficial for the relationship, but also economically, as less money is spent on medication for the health problems the disease causes. Overall, it benefits the whole family,” I add.
