Better Business Bureau provides advice on returns and exchanges

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (Edited Press Release/KY3) – Better Business Bureau recommends shoppers returning or exchanging gifts check return policies before heading to the store this year.

Returns can be inconvenient, especially during the post-holiday rush. Retailers expect their return rate for the 2024 holiday season to be, on average, 17% higher than the rest of the year, especially as online shopping continues to dominate the holiday shopping scene more and more each year.

Easy returns are becoming increasingly important to buyers. This year, PwC reported that hassle-free returns are a key factor in consumers’ decisions about where to shop during the holidays. 87% of consumers told PwC that they expect retailers to process their returns in a timely manner, and 82% said they specifically seek out stores with an easy returns process.

Vacation returns can be more complicated than usual. Stores have unique return policies and often adjust them around the holidays. Many retailers are also introducing new policies as more consumers choose to purchase gifts online – 33% of retailers now offer “return” or “keep” policies.

While there’s nothing you can do about the fact that returns are sometimes a hassle, you can make the process a little easier by preparing as much as possible.

“Check store policies before going to the store to reduce the stress of returning gifts,” said Michelle L. Corey, president and CEO of BBB St. Louis. “It’s better to ask about the policy than to find out too late that you made the wrong assumption.”

BBB’s tips for a hassle-free return:

  • Check or ask about the return policy beforehand. This is the best way to avoid surprise return issues. If you’re shopping at a brick-and-mortar store, ask if you can return or exchange an item for a cash refund or store credit. Check the return or exchange deadline – some stores have extended return periods over the holidays, while seasonal stores may have limited hours after the holidays.
  • Please remember that different policies may apply for online returns. A return policy can usually be found on the seller’s website. Find out if the store will deduct shipping or restocking fees from the price of your returned item. Some online retailers offer a “keep” policy, where you get a refund but don’t return the item to the retailer. BBB has more tips for online returns.
  • Request a gift receipt and include it with the gift. If possible, do not remove the items from the packaging before packing them. The original packaging may be required for a return. Leave labels on clothing. If you remove or cross out the price on the label, try to leave the item number or barcode visible so the store can process the return.
  • Keep your own receipt. Even if you include the gift receipt with the gift, it is advisable to keep a copy of your original receipt in case the gift recipient has any issues with the return.
  • Find out the rules for returning gifts without a receipt. Returning gifts without a receipt can be difficult. Without a receipt, most retailers will offer a store credit or exchange rather than a full refund to your original payment method, especially if the item is discounted or on sale.
  • Do not assume that regular return policies apply to clearance or clearance items. Stores often consider these items final sales, so ask before purchasing.
  • Ask about restocking fees. Some stores charge a restocking or “open box” fee for returns, particularly for electronic products or high-ticket items.

Watch out for return fraud. Beware of fraudulent return policies or suspicious third-party return services that promise to handle the process for you. Always process your returns through the company’s official website or a brick-and-mortar location.

  • Time returns wisely. Return lines can be long the day after Christmas, but don’t wait too long to return items. Choose a time when the store is less crowded. Be considerate of customer service representatives. If you’re a regular customer or have a credit account, politely mention this when discussing return options – stores are usually willing to accept loyal customers.
