Liverpool player ratings against Leicester as ‘incredible’ striker makes statement but two Reds disappoint

Liverpool extended their lead at the top of the Premier League table with a comeback win against Leicester City on a foggy night at Anfield.

Jordan Ayew gave the visitors a surprise lead, but the likes of Cody Gakpo, Curtis Jones and Mohamed Salah added their names to the scoresheet and turned the tide in Liverpool’s favour.

And here’s how we rated each player in the game.

Alisson Becker 7: Not much could have prevented Ayew’s goal as it came from close range and also took a deflection. Was just a spectator for the rest of the game as Liverpool dominated the game.

Trent Alexander Arnold 8: Fantastic play from the Liverpool vice-captain as he provided the attackers with a handful of crosses. Defended quite well and was right in the middle of the action.

Virgil van Dijk 6: Ayew’s goal was a good effort from Leicester, but Van Dijk could have done better by not getting the ball to him in the first place. Apart from that moment, the Dutchman was confident and led the defensive line without breaking a sweat.

Joe Gomez 7: Another solid game for the Englishman, who represented the injured Ibrahima Konate incredibly well. Liverpool are very lucky to have a player of Gomez’s quality in their squad.

Andy Robertson 5: Another game in which he wasn’t entirely convincing. Robertson was turned on Ayew’s goal and although he fired a few crosses into the box, they were not of the desired quality.

Ryan Gravenberch 7: Another decent performance from the Dutch midfielder who can seemingly do no wrong in slot. Was an imposing presence in the middle of the park and played his way out of trouble with a few trademark spins and runs either side of half-time.

Alexis Mac Allister 6: He was overwhelmed in the middle of the goal several times in the first half, but was heavily involved in the second goal when he provided the assist for Curtis Jones. He was also credited with an assist for Gakpo’s equaliser, but that was just a simple pass into the path of the Dutchman, who scored a direct goal.

Curtis Jones 7: Marked his 100th Premier League appearance for the club with a superb team goal straight after the break that helped complete the comeback. He loves life under Arne Slot and has quickly developed into a key player under the Dutchman.

Mohamed Salah 8: Another day, another goal for the Egyptian king, who was in the thick of things from the start. He hit the post in the first half and scored the Reds’ third goal with a fantastic left-footed shot. A season for the history books so far.

Darwin Nunez 5: Tried his best but failed again in front of the Liverpool goal. With Diogo Jota, Federico Chiesa and Luis Diaz available to choose from, it’s hard to imagine Slot staying with the Uruguayan in the coming weeks.

Cody Gakpo 9 – Man of the Match: Undoubtedly the best player on the pitch, even before his brilliant equalizer late in the first half, and is slowly starting to cement his place as Slot’s preferred left winger. One of his best games of the season and he scored his tenth goal in all competitions.

Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler described Gakpo as an “incredible” player and he shows exactly why he has earned so much praise this season.

Substitute

Diogo Jota 6: After replacing Nunez in the second half, he was able to get into a few good positions inside the penalty area.

Dominik Szoboszlai 5: He came on as a substitute for Jones late in the game and received a costly yellow card, meaning he will miss the Premier League clash against West Ham United due to suspension.

Wataru Endo, Harvey Elliott and Kostas Tsimikas N/A: He came on as a substitute with ten minutes to play to end the game and didn’t do enough to warrant a rating.
