Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma said the encounter between the police and the gangster took place after he tried to escape from police custody with a huge cache of weapons.

A city resident, Vivek Mattu of Patti Barri Jandiala, was attacked by two gangsters named Manjit Singh and Amandeep Singh on December 16.

Sharma said both gangsters opened fire on Vivek due to their allegiance to the notorious Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gang, following which he was injured.

The Police Commissioner further said that both the accused were arrested by the police and another accused Davinderpal Singh was also arrested. He said that information provided by Manjit and Amandeep led to the recovery of a 9mm pistol and three 9mm cartridges.

Sharma said that these criminals are involved in murder, threats, extortion, ransom and many other criminal activities and added that several FIR cases are already pending against them.

“Manjit had disclosed the presence of additional weapons near a petrol pump and adjoining vacant properties. However, when the police took him to the crime scene, Manjit opened fire on the police with the weapons they had hidden. The police responded in self-defense, leading to an exchange of fire with approximately 15 shots fired during the violent confrontation.

The police commissioner said the accused was injured and police recovered five more .32 caliber weapons and eight rounds of ammunition.
