It is already the second bankruptcy in just a few years: the Ortrander Eisenhütte from southern Brandenburg is bankrupt. But the chances of a successful renovation are good.

Ortrander Eisenhütte GmbH from Lausitz has filed for bankruptcy for the second time in just a few years. The insolvency application was submitted to the Cottbus district court on December 19th.

The ironworks had already run into difficulties in October 2019 and went through initial insolvency proceedings, which were successfully completed in June 2021. Nevertheless, the company now feels compelled to take this step again.

Attorney Olaf Seidel from the AndresPartner law firm was appointed as provisional insolvency administrator. However, Seidel was optimistic and emphasized: “We will of course continue to serve our customers with the proven quality and on-time delivery. They can rely on that.” According to Seidel, the order books for the coming year are well filled and he sees good opportunities for a successful restructuring of the company.

The Ortrander Eisenhütte currently employs around 247 people, whose disadvantages are secured for the next three months by the insolvency benefit from the Federal Employment Agency. The workforce was informed about the situation and, according to the company, is “motivated”.

Ortrander Eisenhütte’s renewed application for insolvency reflects the difficult economic situation of many companies, especially those with high energy consumption. The ironworks specializes in machine-formed iron casting, for example for the automotive industry. Falling demand from the industry already put a strain on the company when it went bankrupt for the first time.

The history of the Ortrand ironworks goes back to 1887, when the metal foundry was founded. After the fall of the Wall, the company was privatized in 1992.
