Windows 11 24H2: USB installation updates prevented

New bug

Windows 11 24H2 doesn’t calm down: An error during the USB installation may mean that further updates are no longer possible. A workaround is available.

Since the beginning of the month, despite ongoing problems, Microsoft has begun to widely distribute the annual feature update to Windows 11 24H2. A new case has now been added to the bugs: As the developers confirm in the Microsoft Learn Center, Windows Update can be deactivated after installation.

If Windows 11 24H2 is installed with an installation medium that explicitly contains the additional security updates for October and November 2024, patches can no longer be installed afterwards. The updates are patch numbers KB5044284, KB5044384 and KB5046617. However, the optional update KB5046740 is not affected.

The problem also doesn’t seem to occur when an installation medium including the December patch is installed; This is the patch number KB5048667. If an installation of Windows 11 24H2 is carried out without any updates installed and these are only downloaded later, the problem should not occur either.

The Microsoft developers do not mention a solution to the problem in the relevant documentation. The only workaround is the note that users should only install Windows 11 24H2 with the update version from December 2024 in order to ensure that Windows Update continues to function. Otherwise, an insecure operating system could result after setup because security-relevant patches will no longer be installed.
