The Satow community sticks together and helps those affected

Hanstorf. In the community of Satow it remained dark in many houses on Friday morning (December 27th): the power was out in the Hanstorf district. On Thursday around 10:30 p.m., a car drove into a substation at the community center on Main Street – switching off the electricity in the community.

Matthias and Diana Darmann were on site as first aiders after the accident. “First the light went out and then the beeper went off,” remembers Matthias Darmann. He was involved in the volunteer fire department and lived just a few meters away from the destroyed power box. “Then we have already seen all the misery,” he continues.

The person who caused the accident was probably driving at too high a speed, left the road and crashed the car into the power box, according to the police. The impact was so strong that a piece of the substation was thrown several meters and damaged a parked Audi. “He was definitely traveling much too fast.” “He didn’t drive fifty,” speculates Diana Darmann. The speed limit on the street is 30. According to the neighbors, however, very few people drive at the prescribed speed. Two people were in the car and were rescued with minor injuries, according to police.

Residents come to the community center to warm up

Help for the district came quickly: the community center was supplied with power in the morning using an emergency generator from the energy service provider Edis. Kai Jens Boehm, chairman of the Satow community council, lives in Hanstorf and has been on site since the morning. He estimates that around 40 people had already come to the community center to warm up in the morning. “We distribute coffee here and those affected can warm up,” he says.

Communication between those affected and the community was quick and many were willing to help.

In the late morning, a small group sits in the main room of the center. The mayor of Satow, Bettina de Oliveira-Arndt, is also there. She praises the cohesion in the town. “Communication between those affected and the community was quick and many were willing to help,” she says.

“That’s why we are a village,” says Kai Jens Boehm with a laugh. “We stick together and help each other.” Some families bring their frozen food to their neighbors on another street who already have power again. Others would invite their neighbors over to shower and warm up.

Shortly after the accident, police and an expert predicted that it would take several days until Hanstorf was back online. But by Friday lunchtime, the majority of households had their power restored thanks to an emergency generator. The rest of the affected houses should also get power again during the day. However, repairing the battered substation could take a few more days.
