Icy rain on the way in Montreal

As the smog warning continues in Montreal, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) issued a special weather statement on Friday warning that freezing rain could occur as the weather warms.

The statement said a “major weather system” from the southern United States could hit Quebec on Sunday and affect the Montreal, Laval, Vaudreuil and Quebec City regions.

“Freezing drizzle or rain may occur in the St. Lawrence Valley from Saturday evening through Sunday,” the statement said. “Significant amounts of precipitation and snowmelt are expected later into Monday.”

While temperatures are expected to remain below freezing, hovering around -10 degrees Celsius on Friday and -5 degrees Celsius on Sunday, they are expected to rise to three degrees Celsius on Sunday and eight degrees Celsius on Monday.

As a result, roads, sidewalks and parking lots are expected to be slippery and “water accumulation may occur on roads or in low-lying areas.”

The smog warning issued Thursday remains in effect in Montreal, Laval and other areas.
