Why the police were called to the Dunnes Store’s first opening

BETWEEN weekly grocery stores and fashion bargains, Dunnes Stores is a staple for Irish households.

But that wasn’t always the case and when the store’s first branch opened its doors in 1944, it caused quite a stir

On March 31st that year, Ben Dunne opened the first ever Dunnes Stores on St Patrick’s Street in Co Cork.

Locals quickly learned of the grand opening and flocked to the store in what the retailer’s archives refer to as a “buying frenzy.”

One of the reasons given for the enthusiasm was the cheap clothing offered at “pre-war prices” in the new store.

During the chaos a window was broken and gardai were called to the scene.

Police officers worked to manage the eager crowd and keep shoppers calm and safe before they entered the store for their first Dunnes experience.

Some 80 years later, the company now employs over 18,000 people and although the opening of a branch in Dunnes may not have caused quite as much fanfare as the very first one, it has cemented its place as one of the country’s leading retailers.

Dunnes Stores now has 138 stores across Europe:

  • 118 in the Republic of Ireland,
  • 15 in Northern Ireland
  • Five stores in Spain.
