More than a museum: Vienna is getting a “Science Center”

The historic state rooms in the Aula of Sciences on Wollzeile in Vienna’s first district, most recently used for events, are to be structurally adapted: the “Austrian Science Communication Center” is to be built there. The aim is to attract 70,000 visitors per year, who will be able to experience the entire range of research in exhibitions, events and hands-on laboratories.

Science Minister Martin Polaschek, Sebastian Schütze, the Rector of the University of Vienna, Jens Schneider, Rector of the Technical University, and Heinz Faßmann, President of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, recently signed the founding declaration. “We want to be more than a museum and not compete with existing museums,” said Faßmann. Less educated groups should also be addressed. The opening is planned for 2027 and 17 million euros will be invested.
