Persona series: developer explains the philosophy of the games

“Persona 5” is considered one of the best role-playing games today and ensured that Atlus’ JRPG series received significantly more attention outside of Japan. In an interview, the creators talked about the philosophy behind the games and what approach they took when developing future titles.

The “Persona” series already includes several main parts, offshoots and spin-offs. The role-playing games from developer Atlus are particularly popular in Japan. And since the release of “Persona 5”which is still considered one of the best role-playing games to this day, the series is also receiving more and more attention in western regions. That’s what happened recently Persona 3 Reload published, a revised new edition of the third part.

“Persona 3”Originally released in 2006, developer Atlus also viewed it as a turning point for the series and for the studio’s values. This is what Kazuhisa Wada, creative producer of the “Persona” series, said at this year’s IT conference CEDEC+KYUSHU (via automat) announced in Japan. He also talked about the philosophy of the games and the approach taken to development.

Persona 3 brought a new philosophy to Atlus

According to Wada, before “Persona 3” they adhered to a value system that he himself referred to as “Only One”. The aim was to develop niche games that didn’t conform, offered shock moments and had a strong influence. Business success is in the background. As Wada explained, back then it was “uncool” to just think about whether a game would sell well. Games were developed according to the motto: “If they like it, then they like it, if not, then they don’t.”

But “Persona 3” finally changed Atlus’ philosophy. From now on, an approach called “Unique & Universal” was pursued: the games should be unique, but also comprehensible. As a result, the developers began to make their title more suitable for the mass market, making it understandable and entertaining for all players. Wada made an interesting comparison: “To put it briefly: it’s like serving the players deadly poison in a sweet shell.”

The poison mentioned by Wada refers to Atlus’ traditional philosophy of creating effective and impressive content. The cute case, on the other hand, represents the stylish design decisions, attractive characters and a certain amount of humor. This makes it possible to appeal to a wide range of players. According to Wada, future “Persona” games should also follow this “unique and universal” approach.

When is Persona 6 coming?

After the success of “Persona 5” and “Persona 5 Royal” and the recently released new edition “Persona 3 Royal”, fans are eagerly awaiting it “Persona 6”. The next part of the JRPG series has not yet been officially announced. However, a reveal could possibly take place next year. According to initial leaks, “Persona 6” could even be released in 2025.
