While the Austrian Bundesliga is on winter break, we want to take a look at some statistics to shorten the wait for the spring season a little. We look at both player and team statistics and try to cover as many aspects as possible. After looking at which players are at the top in the expected goal rating, let’s now look at the expected assists. All graphics and statistical values come from Wyscout Spa

What are the expected assists?

You can find a precise definition and description of the expected assists in our offen.at lexicon! Expected Assists (xA) show how likely a pass is to result in a goal by analyzing the quality and type of pass, e.g. B. Position of the passer and shooter, type of pass (preceding cross, dribbling, flat pass, etc.) and other factors. This statistic evaluates a player’s creative potential better than normal assists, as it also takes into account passes that fail to convert into goals due to poor finishing.

There is also another shortcoming if you only look at the actual assists. Interestingly, assist values vary greatly depending on the source. Dominik Fitz, for example, the best assist provider in the Bundesliga, has nine assists in the current season according to transfermarkt.at, eight according to the official Bundesliga website, seven according to our data provider Wyscout and six assists according to laola1.at. But since we want to focus primarily on the xA values anyway, this difference isn’t too bad. When we talk about actual assists in this article, we use Wyscout’s stats as the source.

The expected assist values for the winter break of the 2024/25 season:

Not surprisingly, Dominik Fitz leads the expected assist rating. The Austrian is also number 1 in the league in terms of actual assists according to all sources and is certainly one of the main reasons why Vienna Austria is currently in second place in the table. You can clearly see here that the majority of the creative burden lies on his shoulders. Only in 17th place is Fitz’s teammate Barry (2.09 xA). Nik Prelec just made it into the top 30 with 1.81 xA and is in 28th place.

Israeli legionnaire Oscar Gloukh is in second place with an xA value of 4.1. With Dorgeles Nene (2.88 xA) and Aleksa Terzic (2.76 xA), two other Salzburg legionnaires just made it into the top 10. What is noticeable about Terzic is that he only had 658 minutes of playing time and was the only player next to Sturm legionnaire Tomi Horvat was in the top 10 who played fewer than 1,000 minutes in the league in the fall.

Tomi Horvat is in fourth place as the best striker player, but only played 880 minutes, so his xA value of 4.03 is quite strong. Surprisingly, the second best Sturm player in this ranking is not Otar Kiteishvili, who is only in 15th place with an xA value of 2.19. William Böving (3.36 xA) and striker Mika Biereth (2.65 xA) are between the two attacking midfielders. Jusuf Gazibegovic, who moved to 1. FC Köln, is in 22nd place with an xA value of 1.95.

In third place is LASK director Robert Zulj, who recently came under heavy criticism from fans because of an interview. However, the value already shows that he has the greatest creative potential in the team. Otherwise, there is only Valon Berisha in the top 30, who is in 18th place with 2.09 xA.

There isn’t a single player from SK Rapid in the top 10. After a good start to the new season, the Green-Whites found it difficult to create scoring chances, especially against low-lying teams, and Matthias Seidl and Louis Schaub didn’t always bring the creativity either impulse that one would expect. Last season it was primarily the offensive wingers Marco Grüll (2nd place) and Nicolas Kühn (5th place) who were primarily responsible for the goal assists. The players in the ten positions are currently not able to create quite this number of chances. Grüll had an xA value of 9.01 last season and only had to give way to Dominik Fitz. The Austrian had an expected assist value of 10.21 last season.

In the current season, Matthias Seidl (2.54 xA) and Jonas Auer (2.49 xA) are the best Rapid players in this rating. Louis Schaub is in 16th place with an xA value of 2.19. Dion Beljo (1.94 xA) and Bendeguz Bolla (1.83 xA) still make it into the top 30. Interestingly, another Rapid player, Benjamin Böckle, is in 30th place . The full-back has an xA value of 1.73 in just 272 minutes of play.

Otherwise, WAC legionnaire Dejan Zukic, Austria Klagenfurt veteran Christopher Wernitznig and Hartberg creative player Dominik Prokop also show strong performances and are all in the top 10.
