Depending on your age, you should be able to do at least this many push-ups if you are healthy and fit

Push-ups: hated and loved at the same time – but how many do you need to test your true fitness?

Push-ups are a classic exercise that everyone knows but many avoid. No wonder, they are demanding and need patience. But hardly any other exercise is as effective and is so suitable for making training more challenging.

Most people think push-ups are just about the upper body. In fact, it works multiple muscle groups at the same time, provided you do it with the right technique. While it’s true that the focus is on the upper body, push-ups are an often underestimated exercise and a great test to find out if you’re truly fit.

Most people have already tried out how many push-ups they can do in a row. Whether in the gym or for fun – the number is often far less than what you originally planned. But you shouldn’t let that discourage you. Finally, this also means that there is still a chance for you to improve.

This many push-ups are considered the minimum for a healthy body

How many push-ups each person should be able to do to be fit depends on several factors: gender, age, training experience, fitness goals and current physical condition. On average, you should be able to do 20 to 25 push-ups, although this number can vary. Studies show how many push-ups are considered appropriate depending on age:

  • Between 17 and 19 years: 19 to 34 push-ups
  • Between 20 and 29 years: 17 to 29 push-ups
  • Between 30 and 39 years: 13 to 24 push-ups
  • Between 40 and 49 years: 11 to 20 push-ups
  • Between 50 and 59 years: 9 to 17 push-ups
  • Between 60 and 65 years: 6 to 16 push-ups

You probably won’t be able to do the push-ups in one go on your first try. That’s why it makes sense to divide them into smaller blocks. If the goal is still difficult to achieve, easier variations can help, such as push-ups on your knees. It is important that you always pay attention to the correct technique and a suitable pace to avoid injuries.

Why push-ups are essential

Push-ups are one of the most important exercises for your fitness. The best thing about it: They work anywhere and without devices. If you want to improve, you can use weighted vests or plates to increase the challenge.
