Dog baiting in Schaumburg: Public prosecutor’s office closes numerous cases

District/ Meinefeld. Pollhagen, Hespe, Nienstädt, Bad Nenndorf or Stadthagen: Dog bait has been found repeatedly in Schaumburg towns this year. In some cases, the meat prepared with poison or nails could be discovered before animals were injured. Sometimes, however, the dog was faster and ate the bait.

“The proceedings have all been discontinued,” said Nils-Holger Dreißig, spokesman for the Bückeburg public prosecutor’s office, when asked. In none of the cases could a suspect be identified, says Dreißig, explaining the process. Even if some of the cases are related or several people are targeting the dogs, this remains an open question.

The recent case of Retriever/Australian Shepard mix Pluto from Meinefeld was particularly explosive. At the beginning of September, the dog ate a piece of meat with around 50 nails on a dirt road and had to undergo emergency surgery.

As reported, the majority of the nails were removed from the animal’s body, and Pluto expelled the rest in the following days. Because there had already been several discoveries, many dog owners in the area were afraid that their animal could be the next victim.

“Pluto is back to his old self and fit again,” reports the owner three and a half months after the incident. There hasn’t been any recent news of bait being found around Meinefeld. “There is currently some calm in the place.”
