Special exhibition on Rizal opens on the 128th commemoration of his martyrdom

FOR the country’s annual commemoration of the martyrdom of Dr. Jose Rizal on December 30, 2024, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) opens the special exhibition “Remembering Rizal in Artworks and Monuments” at the main lobby and second floor of the NHCP Main Building, TM Kalaw Street, Ermita, Manila.

The exhibition features artworks from the NHCP collection, which Dr. Immortalize Rizal’s life, ideals and sacrifices and provide a deeper understanding of his enduring influence on the nation.

Several notable works of art are on display, including National Artist Carlos “Botong” Francisco’s “Exile in Dapitan,” a painting in sombre blues and greens depicting the clandestine meeting between Rizal and Dr. Pio Valenzuela represents; Rizal’s terracotta statuette “Triumph of Death over Life,” a poignant symbol of the intricate connection between life and mortality; and Fernando Amorsolo’s posthumous portrait of “Rizal as a Mason,” characterized by the artist’s signature soft diffused lighting that gives the piece warmth and humanity.

The exhibition, which runs for a month, aims to inspire appreciation for the legacy of one of our national heroes.

On the 128th commemoration of his martyrdom, the theme “Rizal: Sa Bagong Pilipinas, Buhay at Aral Aming Nilalandas” aims to provide Filipinos with an opportunity to reflect on the values ​​that his heroism embodied and how these serve as the foundation for our lives can future.

In anticipation of the 170th birth anniversary of artist Telesforo Sucgang, born on January 5, 1855, the NHCP Museo ni Jose Rizal Fort Santiago in collaboration with the Telesforo Alayon Sucgang Legacy Initiative Team, Quezon’s Artistry and Creativity and Urban Sketchers Manila with special participation of NHCP Museum of Philippine Maritime History will host and moderate the portrait workshop “Hagod” Rizal’” at the premises of the NHCP Museo ni Jose Rizal Fort Santiago on December 30, 2024, 10 a.m

Guest artists from Quezon’s Artistry and Creativity will also host an artist talk and exhibition tour of artworks and advocacy on the theme “Rizal’s Legacy of Unity, Hope and Change.”

On the same day, the “Jose & Telesforo Sketchwalk” commemorative plein air featuring artist participants from Urban Sketchers Manila will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This exhibition aims to provide a deeper visual insight into the life and work of Telesforo Sucgang, the artist with a raw depiction of Rizal, whose influence continues to resonate among other works honoring one of our national heroes.

In this spirit, the country’s 128th commemoration of Rizal’s martyrdom will be remembered under the theme “Rizal: Sa Bagong Pilipinas, Buhay at Aral Aming Nilalandas.”
