To ensure that the Mahakumbh 2025 is a safe, grand and spiritually enriching event, the Government of Uttar Pradesh has initiated extensive preparations.

Preparations for Mahakumbh 2025 are underway

To prepare for the massive influx of visitors, Uttar Pradesh is turning the region into a temporary city-like facility. Known as Mahakumbh NagarThis area will be equipped with thousands of tents and shelters, offering everything from basic accommodation to luxurious options. One such luxury accommodation is IRCTC’s ‘Mahakumbh Gram’ tent city, which offers luxury tents and villas with modern amenities.

To support the event’s infrastructure, renovation work on 92 streets is nearing completion and beautification of 17 major streets is also underway. The construction of 30 pontoon bridges is underway, 28 of which are already in operation. These efforts aim to provide a pleasant and welcoming experience for the expected millions of believers.

Boosting local economy: Mahakumbh themed products in high demand

As the Mahakumbh approaches, local trade experiences a significant boost. Products like diaries, calendars, gunny bags and Mahakumbh style stationery are witnessing a surge in demand. According to a statement from the Ministry of Culture, sales of such items have increased by up to 25 percent thanks to effective branding and growing anticipation of the event.

This increase in demand reflects the growing cultural and spiritual significance of the Mahakumbh, which attracts people not only for its religious significance but also as a cultural celebration of India’s rich heritage and traditions.

Technology, security and convenience for devotees in Mahakumbh

The Government of Uttar Pradesh is also using modern technology to ensure the safety and comfort of participants. One of the most innovative features is an AI-powered chatbot that helps visitors by answering questions about the Kumbh in multiple languages. The chatbot integrated into the “Bhasini app” is intended to help pilgrims navigate through the event and find important information. This AI initiative is a unique experiment that highlights the integration of technology into the spiritual experience.

In addition to the chatbot, over 800 multilingual signages including Hindi, English and other languages will be installed to guide visitors. More than 400 of these signs have already been erected, with the remainder expected to be completed by December 31, 2024. Special arrangements have also been made for international visitors, including multilingual signage and cultural programs showcasing the diversity of India’s spiritual traditions.

Safety and hygiene are top priority. Over 2,69,000 corrugated slabs will be laid to create safe paths for pilgrims. Mobile toilets, robust waste management systems and AI-enabled security cameras will also be deployed to maintain cleanliness and ensure the safety of participants.

The most important bathing festivals: Important dates to remember

The event focuses on the main bathing festivals of the Mahakumbh, known as “Shahi Snan” (royal baths). These take place on three important dates where the biggest crowds are expected:

  • January 14th (Makar Sankranti)
  • January 29th (Mauni Amavasya)
  • February 3rd (Basant Panchami)

These dates are historically significant and will gather millions of devotees to bathe in the holy waters of the Sangam, the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna and the mythical river Sarasvati, to cleanse themselves of sins and attain spiritual purification.

Focus on security and accessibility

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath recently took stock of the ongoing preparations. During a tour of the tent city under construction, he stressed the importance of making timely arrangements for food, shelter and medical care, especially given the cold weather during the festival. The Prime Minister also stressed the need for separate wards for men and women, efficient shift work for staff and quick response times for ambulances in emergencies.

The state government’s commitment to ensuring a seamless experience for the pilgrims reflects the magnitude and significance of the Mahakumbh. With efforts in infrastructure, security, hospitality and technology, Mahakumbh 2025 promises to be a magnificent and spiritually enriching event for devotees from all over the world.
