Another electric car will come later: Ram will rely on combustion engines instead

The new all-electric Ram will come much later.

(Stellantis/Ram)The new all-electric Ram will come much later.

The US manufacturer Ram actually wanted to bring its first fully electric pickup in 2025. Nothing will come of it for now. Instead there is a fat one combustion engine with Mixed drive.

After an initial surge during Corona times, the demand for fully electric vehicles is no longer really gaining momentum. Customer interest is rather low, sales figures are different than expected and brand new electric cars are getting flat tires in huge dumps. In contrast, hybrid drives, which have almost been declared dead, are finding new fame in important markets. More and more buyers are opting for the mix of electric and spirit.

Of course, manufacturers also noticed this and reacted to the trend, including Ram. Formerly known as the model name for Dodge pickup trucks, the US brand is now independent. It belongs to Stellantis, like Lancia, Citroën, Opel, Chrysler, Fiat and Dodge. The group has recently postponed the launch of its brands’ electric cars several times. One example is the market launch of Lancia’s first purely electric vehicle, planned for 2026.

E-Ram comes later, but the Ramcharger comes earlier

Now it has also hit the Ram 1500 REV, the first fully electric pickup truck announced for next year. According to the manufacturer, the market launch of the electric pickup will be postponed to 2026. Instead, the Ramcharger is now coming earlier. This is a response to the “declining industry demand for BEV pickups weighing half a ton,” according to a statement from the company.

The advanced Ramcharger comes with a 92 kWh battery and can cover over 200 kilometers purely electrically. In addition, the vehicle has a 3.6 liter V6 engine and an additional 130 kW generator. This can be used to supply the battery with power. This means a range of up to 1,100 kilometers is possible. Apart from a few minor changes, the hybrid version looks very similar to the current combustion engine version. This means that Ram continues to provide its customers in the USA with the familiar and successful look.

Huge battery and chain burner

The combination of a huge battery with 92 kWh, which is enough for a good 600 kilometers in purely electric cars (such as the Audi Q6 etron quattro), and a gasoline engine with a displacement of over three liters seems strange to many. This means that the 660 hp Ramcharger can be expected to weigh well over three tons, which results in such a short range.

The possible trailer and payload capacity of the Ramcharger also suggests that it is very heavy. The performance allows it to have a towing capacity of 6.3 tonnes and a payload capacity of 1.2 tonnes. According to the company, acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h is possible in just 4.4 seconds. What the Ramcharger will cost and when and whether it will find its way to Germany remains to be seen. According to the manufacturer, the first orders will be possible in the first half of 2025.
