The General Association of the German Insurance Industry (GDV) uses various statistics to calculate the type classes. How much your motor vehicle liability insurance costs depends on the provider, the payment interval you choose and, above all, the type class of the vehicle. The determination of the type class depends on various factors, such as the total amount of damage suffered by the owners of the respective model or the frequency of accidents in the regions.

The value of the vehicle, among other things, plays a role in comprehensive insurance. Luxury vehicles with a lot of horsepower and SUVs tend to have a high type class. Older or smaller vehicles, on the other hand, are cheaper because they fall into a lower type class.

In the According to GDV type class statistics, a total of around 33,000 models and their damage records are listed. The vehicles of over twelve million car owners will be reclassified for the coming year. If you’re lucky, you’ll be placed in a lower class or paid as much as before. According to ADAC, liability insurance will become more expensive for 7.1 million vehicles in 2025.

The new type classes 2025: This will change for you

Canceling car insurance: This is how it works

Higher insurance premiums are annoying. Some people understandably think about switching to another insurer. Some of the insurance companies have announced cancellations for the coming year Increases by an average of 26 percent a. The deadline for cancellation always runs on November 30th of each year out of. This year it was December 2nd because the deadline fell on a weekend. Anyone who has missed this can, under certain circumstances, claim a special right of termination. This means that even during the year, premium increases can be dealt with by canceling your contract. You then have the option of switching to another provider. Die The deadline for a special termination is always four weeks.

Under these conditions you have the chance to cancel your car insurance at any time:

Higher contribution, same benefit: If the insurance premium increases, the benefits improve or do not change, customers can use a special right of termination. To do this, you must compare the previous services with the new contract.

Change of vehicle: You can cancel if you change your vehicle. Sell it goes loudly Allianz transfers the contract to the new owner. You will get back everything you have paid in advance for the year. When you buy a new car, you can either take over the previous owner’s car insurance or use your special right of cancellation and take out new car insurance.

Damage event: After an accident, your insurance company will cover the damage. Once everything has been completed, you can make use of the special right of termination. This is worth it if the accident puts you in a lower no-claims class. This will increase your premiums and allow you to cancel the contract within four weeks of notification from the insurer.

Hidden price increase: If you as a driver have made it through the year without any accidents or claims, you will move up to a higher no-claims class. This means your premiums will go down because of a discount. However, some insurers still increase the premiums and then cover this up with the discount. If you do not receive the full discount, you can use the special right of termination. It’s not easy to figure out at first glance. Pay attention to the comparison post. If the new contribution is higher than the comparison contribution, you can make use of the special right of termination. Because insurers have no longer had to state the settlement amount for several years, many customers overlook this. But there is a formula you can use to find out:

Multiply the old contribution by the new contribution rate and then divide by the old contribution rate. In practice it looks like this: Assuming the old contribution is 500 euros, the invoice for 2025 only shows 480 euros. However, you moved from SF class 2 (old contribution rate: 49 percent) to SF class 3 (new contribution rate: 46 percent) in the year. In that case you would have to calculate the following:

500 x 0.46 : 0.49

That results in 469.39 euros. The insurer also helped you Overcharged by 10.61 euros. You are allowed to cancel because of this hidden premium increase. Or you can point this out to the insurer and they will adjust the amount.

Important: In order for the extraordinary termination to be correct, the termination must be submitted no later than the last day of your insurance period. When it comes to special cancellation of your motor vehicle insurance, the date of receipt and not the date of dispatch of the cancellation always counts. It is best to send your cancellation online, by email or by fax. This means you have until the last day to do this. If you do send it by post, it is best to send the letter as registered mail. In any case, make sure that no holidays or weekends get in your way. And don’t forget to state the reason for termination. If you took out your insurance before October 1, 2016, you must cancel in the traditional way by letter or fax.

Some situations call for termination, but they are still not a reason for a special right of termination. This applies, for example, if…

… You move: The insurer can’t help it that a different regional class applies at the new location. Therefore, this is not a reason for a special termination.

… new number of kilometers per year: If you drive more than you stated when you signed the contract and therefore pay higher premiums than when you took out your motor vehicle liability insurance, this does not give you the right to extraordinary termination.

… the price increases due to additional services: If the insurer expands its services and therefore adjusts the prices, you are not allowed to cancel. The law only applies if prices rise without the services improving.

This is how you save on insurance premiums

How How high the insurance premium will be for motor vehicle liability and partial or fully comprehensive insurance depends on several factors.

We already mentioned one criterion at the beginning: The data from previous years. Also how much damage was caused to certain vehicles and how high were the repair and damage contributions that the insurance had to cover. The lower, the lower the type class and vice versa.

Furthermore, play individual criteria and discount features a role. Policyholders can partly influence these themselves. For example, how many kilometers you drive annually, whether you pay the insurance monthly, quarterly or once a year, whether the car is garaged and how high the deductible is in the event of damage. The higher the deductible, the lower the contribution.

It is also very important how long someone has been on the road without any accidents is. The longer, the cheaper the contribution. Young people generally pay more and those who register several drivers also pay more.
