Chabad of Southern Nevada celebrates Hanukkah at several Valley events

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — Thursday marks the first day and second night of Hanukkah. Rabbi Levi Harlig of Chabad in Southern Nevada explained the meaning of the Festival of Lights.

“The story takes us back to a little over 2,000 years ago. The Jewish people were under Greek-Syrian rule and forbade us to maintain our religion,” Harlig began.

“Two Hanukkah miracles. Miracle number one: The Jews formed a small army. Although their numbers were small, their trust in God was great and they fought back and prevailed in battle over the mighty Greek-Syrian soldiers.”

“Miracle number two: They return to the temple and the temple was destroyed. They clean it up and want to light the menorah, and to light the menorah you have to have pure olive oil that has the seal of the High One.” Priest. They searched and found a small jar that was enough for a day. They trusted in God and lit this menorah, and it lasted for eight nights and days.

Harlig further explained that traditional Hanukkah dishes are also fried in oil to commemorate the miracle of oil.
