A lot of thought and planning now goes into designing classroom environments, as it is important to create the right mix of social and educational elements to stimulate interest and curiosity in young learners.

Nowadays that means finding a suitable place for more technology in the classroom, even for the youngest students. And, just as important, it means adopting learning approaches that promote the qualities that society values ​​today, such as collaboration, creativity and self-confidence.

At International College Hong Kong–Hong Lok Yuen (ICHKHLY), which has a kindergarten and a primary school, a main goal is to create a warm and welcoming space where children feel safe and secure.

“Our space is used to give children autonomy in their learning,” says Holly Ayonote, kindergarten director at ICHKHLY. “Certain areas are designed for collaboration, whether building or role-playing, but there are also places for those who want to play individually or find a quiet place to regulate their emotions.”
